American goes all in on Starlink. Delta stands alone
American will fit Starlink across its entire mainline fleet from 2027. With almost every serious competitor now committed, Delta’s bet on Amazon’s Leo network is starting to look less like discipline and more like exposure.
On 8 October, American Airlines turned a week of trade rumours into an official commitment that goes beyond what was reported: Starlink across the entire mainline fleet, more than 1,030 aircraft, Airbus and Boeing, narrowbody and widebody alike. Installations begin in early 2027. The version leaked the week before covered only Boeing jets. The real announcement folds them into one programme alongside the Airbus rollout confirmed in May.
Widen the lens, and American looks less like an outlier than the last major holdout falling in line. United is already partway through its own rollout, targeting over 500 mainline aircraft fitted by the end of this year. Qatar Airways, Emirates, Gulf Air and flydubai are all mid-rollout or equipping fleets this year. Lufthansa Group (Austrian, Swiss, Brussels Airlines, Eurowings, ITA Airways and the rest) started flying it in August, with full coverage targeted by 2029. Korean Air and its Hanjin Group sister carriers switched on select aircraft in September. Indigo Partners has committed more than 1,000 aircraft across Frontier, Wizz Air, Volaris, JetSMART and Cebu Pacific. Even Italy’s Italo high-speed trains have offered free Starlink Wi-Fi since May, calling itself the first railway operator in the world to do so.
Delta stands apart. Instead, it backed Amazon’s Leo satellite network, a service that will not launch before 2028, after a public falling-out between Elon Musk and CEO Ed Bastian over the decision. It is the same instinct Delta showed when it refused the Airbus A321XLR: betting that its own standard matters more than the industry’s. That bet can read as discipline. On connectivity, with almost every serious competitor now committed, it is starting to read as exposure, and this particular announcement landed a day before Delta’s Q3 results, with nothing new to show on the one product gap its rivals keep closing.
Prediction: within two months, expect at least one more network carrier currently listed as “in talks” by the Seatwifi Starlink tracker (easyJet, Turkish Airlines) to convert to a signed Starlink commitment, narrowing the list of holdouts further. Delta’s position will not move that quickly: a satellite constellation due no earlier than 2028 isn’t something a single earnings call can change.
Confidence: medium on a specific carrier conversion within two months, since neither easyJet nor Turkish Airlines has given a date; high that Delta’s public position stays unchanged in the short term, because the constraint here is physical, not rhetorical.
