Lufthansa Group goes direct to consumers with its first group brand campaign
Lufthansa Group has launched “Greatness is a Group effort”, the first consumer campaign for its umbrella brand, just as TAP Air Portugal joins the portfolio queue.

On 21 October 2026, Lufthansa Group began rolling out its first consumer-facing brand campaign under the line “Greatness is a Group effort”. Until now, travellers have bought a seat on Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, ITA Airways, Eurowings, Air Dolomiti, Edelweiss or Discover. The group was once known as a name for investors, analysts, and corporate travel buyers. The campaign is designed to change that. Lufthansa Group says it is the world’s first airline group to position itself as a B2C brand.
What the campaign promises
The message is a list of tangible benefits rather than a mood. By connecting its airlines and hubs into one network, the group argues it offers more choice, more connections, and more flexibility, along with an extensive lounge network, shared loyalty benefits, and digital services. The press release adds that each airline keeps its own character, and that individual carriers will continue marketing in parallel. Lufthansa’s own centenary campaign, launched in January, is one example of that parallel track.
The campaign film sits on the group’s consumer homepage, which already speaks directly to travellers and presents the carriers as complementary national personalities under one roof. The rollout will be gradual, reaching each airline’s customer journey through digital channels, social media, lounges, airports and on board.
Chief Commercial Officer Dieter Vranckx, whose remit includes the brand portfolio, described the line as “a strategic investment in our future” rather than a slogan.
The second step of a planned sequence
The campaign follows the new group identity unveiled in December 2025. That redesign removed the circle around the crane, introduced a new typeface and six additional colours, and added a “Member of Lufthansa Group” endorsement to every aircraft operated under a brand other than Lufthansa. Group branding was also scheduled to appear at lounge entrances worldwide during 2026, extending what was already in place in Rome, Milan and Brussels. At the time, Vranckx described the change as the group’s evolution from a collection of airlines into an integrated airline group.
The group appointed Mother as its global lead creative agency in January 2026 after a pitch for the umbrella brand. The brief covered all nine airlines plus Miles & More, Lufthansa Technik, Lufthansa Aviation Training and Lufthansa Cargo, and asked for a single brand platform that works for both the group and each airline. Chief Marketing Officer Olivier Krüger framed it then as moving from a group of airlines to one strong airline group. According to HORIZONT, this campaign is the first joint output of that mandate.
Why now: the portfolio keeps growing
The timing is hard to separate from TAP Air Portugal. On 14 October, Portugal selected Lufthansa’s bid for a 44.9% stake in the carrier, in a deal the government valued at €1.2 billion. The transaction still needs EU regulatory approval, and the government has indicated that full privatisation could follow by 2028. TAP keeps its brand, its Lisbon hub and its headquarters.
That detail matters for the campaign. Every acquisition Lufthansa Group has made in recent years has preserved the acquired brand, from SWISS and Austrian to Brussels Airlines and ITA Airways. A growing house of brands creates a recognition problem: the customer sees the operating airline, while the value of the network, the lounges and the loyalty programme sits one level up. A consumer-facing group brand holds that portfolio together, and it scales to a sixth network airline without forcing anyone to repaint a fleet.
The marketing logic
In brand-architecture terms, Lufthansa Group is moving from a “house of brands”, where the parent stays invisible, to an “endorsed brand” model, where the parent vouches for each sub-brand to the customer. Consumer goods companies have made this shift before, putting a once-silent corporate name alongside their product brands to build trust and cross-sell. Hospitality offers a closer parallel: Marriott and Accor both turned their group loyalty programmes into consumer brands spanning dozens of hotel names, so the relationship with the guest belongs to the group rather than any single property brand.
The campaign highlights benefits, lounges, loyalty, and digital services that sit at the group level. Making the group visible to travellers is a way to claim ownership of the customer relationship above the operating carrier, which becomes more valuable as distribution fragments across OTAs, NDC channels, and, increasingly, AI-driven booking tools.
The two European rivals have taken different routes. IAG and Air France-KLM lead with their airlines and shared loyalty currencies, Avios and Flying Blue, respectively, rather than a consumer-facing group brand.
The open questions
A group brand is only as credible as the experience behind it. “Greatness is a Group effort” invites travellers to judge the group as one system, so a missed connection between two group carriers, an inconsistent lounge, or a loyalty benefit that doesn’t travel across airlines now reflects on the umbrella rather than a single airline. The portfolio also spans premium network carriers and leisure and low-cost operators such as Eurowings and Discover, and holding a coherent promise across that range is not trivial.
The next signals to watch are whether the group brand moves from communication into the transaction: a group-level booking front end, further group branding of loyalty and lounges, and how quickly TAP receives the “Member of Lufthansa Group” endorsement once the deal closes.
